REPORTS TO: Engineering Manager

Protomet Corporation ( is a fast-growing product development, engineering and manufacturing company, serving our clients’ high-precision production manufacturing needs.


The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for developing innovative designs, analyzing them for form, function, strength, manufacturability and cost. The successful candidate will also support the production, or purchase of, finished products and ensure that existing product designs are properly documented. The Design Engineer will be called upon as needed to support Engineer-To-Order projects across the company’s multiple divisions. This position reports to the Engineering Manager, but requires collaboration with production management, manufacturing engineering, sales management and outside technical resources.


  • Maintain organization over multiple simultaneous design projects. Assist with project management as needed
  • Conceptualize new mechanical and electrical products for use across Protomet’s multiple divisions
  • Redesign, update, improve and document current Protomet products or components
  • Determine specifications and recommend components or materials
  • Communicate requirements with technical suppliers, source components, solicit and reviews vendor quotes
  • Perform cost analysis of current and proposed future designs
  • Prepare and present all new/updated designs for review and approval
  • Actively participate and help manage design and R&D efforts throughout the company
  • Perform and review simulations and stress-analysis calculations
  • Participate in Design for Manufacturability processes to ensure that new/existing products are manufactured accurately and to standardize work flow
  • Participate and lead multi-disciplinary teams to determine non-conformance of materials to ensure quality assurance
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures
  • Fabricate custom parts to support R&D as well as Engineer-to-Order projects
  • Participate and assist in leading the implementation of 5S/Lean principles and processes
  • Perform other projects and responsibilities as assigned by Engineering Manager


  • Knowledge of accepted elements of mechanical design i.e. sheet metal, sand casting, machined parts. Drafting standards for manufacturing of all of these elements
  • Properties and production processes of materials such as sheet metal, plastics, aluminum, steel, etc.
  • 3D CAD programs (SolidWorks)
  • CAM programs (Mastercam, Esprit)
  • Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute ratio, percent and volume
  • Creativity
  • Ability to manage stress in a high paced environment
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only a limited standardization exists
  • Advanced project management skills in a highly active environment
  • Ability to draft and decipher product drawings
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical manuals and engineering documents and specifications
  • Strong oral (i.e. comfortable conveying design ideas) and written communication skills

  • 3 – 5 years prior work experience in manufacturing environment
  • Minimum of 2 years prior experience designing and drafting using SolidWorks advanced knowledge and application of this software
  • Prior project management experience; working on group projects
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills working with coworker, management and customers
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs
